Outside a movie premiere, earnest fan Peppy Miller literally bumps into the swashbuckling great man of the silent film, George Valentin. The heavenly body reacts graciously and Peppy plants a kiss ~ward his cheek as they are surrounded ~ means of photographers. The headlines demand: "Who's That Girl?" and Peppy is inspired to audition toward a dancing bit-part at the workshop. However as Peppy slowly rises from one side the industry, the introduction of talking-pictures turns Valentin's universe upside-down.
